Volunteer with us

We are building a community of people to come and spend time at 20 Kendrick Street.

Beacon Volunteers are one of our most precious resources, they are key to our flourishing. Whatever your age, skills and background we hope there is a place for you here to support our work bringing community together to face the danger of the world we live in. So what does this mean on a day to day basis? Based on the ground floor reception and shop area, volunteers are first port of call for the public who come in. This is an opportunity to employ some deep creative listening. People will bring a wide range of emotions stories and questions to us, each volunteer employs their unique perspective in engaging with them. No day at The Beacon is the same, we are continually surprised at what unfolds here. We have resources to help volunteers in how they make the interactions with the public a positive experience for all. The Beacon is an information hub, as well as a listening space for all who come in. There is information about the groups that use the building in our volunteer manual, from Extinction Rebellion, Stop 5G to Stop Ecocide. We are building up a bank of information on all the groups in Stroud, volunteers are key in helping with this.

We are lining up an exciting calendar of events at 20 Kendrick Street, from gigs at the weekend, to workshops, exhibitions and competitions throughout the year. Being on the reception desk is a great place to let people know about what we have planned. We want our volunteers to be part of this too, get involved with our projects, and bring us your ideas for how The Beacon can grow. Taking care of donations and sales is also involved. Outside of this crucial task, making the space welcoming to be in is important. Plump the cushions, arrange the flowers, dust the piano; whatever catches your eye. If you are involved with other activist groups, or have an ethical business, or are a wholistic therapist perhaps, we would be happy to put links to your other work on the website. We will also shine a Beacon spotlight on volunteers who would like to have a piece about them on the website. The Beacon is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. Volunteer slots are 10-1 or 1-4. You can make a regular commitment, or put your name on the rota (in pencil always) on a more ad hoc basis. You will be trained and supported, and welcomed into our community.
